With amazing horizontal visibility at an average of 63 meters of the constantly 11.7°C cool water, it is also the largest cold water springs in the Southern Hemisphere, discharging 14,000 litres of water per second.

Until 2011 it was considered second only to sub-glacial water in the Antarctic. Since that year, however, the record holder for fresh water clarity is the Blue Lake (Tasman) still in New Zealand. (Wikipedia)

The waters of Te Waikoropupu Springs are closed to all forms of contact to safeguard water quality and to respect cultural values. This is a great place to go bird watching.

An easy and picturesque walking track leads to the to a platform that sits partly over the water. Water is very clear with many different native birds in surroundings.

Walking time is about 5-10min. You can return via the same path or do a loop via another path (15 min extra) to get back to the car parking area. The car park is quite spacious, has picnic tables. The facility including a toilet.
