Cape Farewell
About
The Northernmost part of the South Island. An awesome view of the rough north coast. Short 5 min walk from the car park which can be extended as far as you want through the hills to the Pillar Point lighthouse and further.
This land was first mapped in 1642 by Dutch explorer Abel Tasman but named as Cape Farewell by British explorer Captain James Cook in 1770 as it was the last land seen by his crew as they departed New Zealand on the ship's homeward voyage.
From the car park, it just takes a short (but uphill) walk to get to the spot. The walk is easy, just watch out for sheep poo :-) and leave the farm gates as you find them. While up there, be careful at the cliff edge - the wind could be very strong. From there you can walk further towards either Wharariki or Farewell Spit to access the sandy beach and do dunes exploring. If you see seals, keep the safe distance.
On a right, at the distance, you can see a Pillar Point Lighthouse. You can get there in about 30min walking.
Photos are better with a morning sun.
